Ninja Nonsense Review (Anime)

Ninja Nonsense is an anime series released by Right Stuf International in the U.S.  In Japan the series has a different title, but since I'm not Japanese and don't give a crap about their clever pun that makes no sense, I'm sticking with Ninja Nonsense.  Nonsense is a pretty good title for it anyway, because this is one of the more random, goofy, perverted, and hilarious anime I have ever watched even though none of it makes a lick of sense.  Good times.

Ninja Nonsense stars a young female ninja named Shinobu who is s
ent out by her ninja master on a secret mission.  Her mission:  To steal underwear from teenage girls.  Yeah, this is that kind of series.  Her master, Onsokumaru, is a sort of magical transforming yellow ball who can fly and change into a human form and all sorts of stuff.  But mostly he's just a pervert.  He is a talented ninja, and does know what he's talking about, but he's a pervert.  Most episodes are just plots by Onsokumaru to dress Shinobu and her friend Kaede in revealing outfits.  You know what, though?  That is just fine.

The series is built upon fan service (panty shots, bouncing breasts, cleavage, side boob) and lots of innuendo and sex jokes, but it never goes too far.  Nothing sexual ever actually happens, which is where a lot of the humor of the series comes from.  The characters are a vital part of this balance.  Shinobu is adorable in her naivete.  Kaede is more street smart and recognizes what Onsokumaru is planning and protects Shinobu.  Onsokumaru is genuinely clever, but rather unlucky.  And the other ninjas (of which there are dozens but only one is recognized by name) are at the same time pervy, but also protective of Shinobu.  This all comes together to be funny and decidedly twisted, but never uncomfortably dirty.

In all honesty, the ninjas are actually the best part of the series.  They all look the same and have glowing red eyes.  They say and do just ridiculously random and silly things and are awesome all around.  They all read porn mags.  They hold meetings every day talking about how to meet girls, or what the best pick up lines are, or a bunch of other goofy crap about finding girls.  And, yet, when push comes to shove and they have to do actual ninja stuff, they are bad ass and good at it.

All in all, Ninja Nonsense is a series that really surprised me.  I don't typically like super random "comedy" (why is I dislike Paniponi Dash), but Ninja Nonsense strikes a fine balance and doesn't go overboard.  It is funny and a little sexy.  The artwork is great.  And the characters are all likable.  At only 12 episodes, it is nice and short and doesn't wear out its welcome.  I like it.  I give it 7/10 or two super surprised cats.

You can buy Ninja Nonsense at Amazon either in a fat case edition that comes with a Shinobu headband and Onsokumaru squeeze toy (which are both pretty cool, actually) or a thin-pak release that is coming out in June.  I'd suggest waiting on the thin-pak, since it'll be a little cheaper.  Ninja Nonsense Dvd Collection (Thinkpak) at Amazon.com
